FAQ's
What is it?
Thatch reed ceiling board is manufactured by gluing individual pieces of cape reed in a single layer to a 4' x8' masonite board. It is made from the same reed used to make our thatch reed panels that are carefully selected for color and quality. Ceiling board was designed to mimic the look of the underside or interior view of a traditional custom thatch roof, a very common roof type in Africa and Europe. Now it is possible to create the rich look of an African lodge when structures are limited to regular shingle or synthetic thatch roofs. To complete the look, eucalyptus battens are used to trim out the ceiling boards to replicate the battens used for custom thatch roofing. Replenishable and renewable thatch reed grows naturally in lovely motted tones of greens, browns and ambers that create a rich mosaic when laid side by side on the masonite.
How is this product most commonly used?
In building with cathedral or open ceilings, ceiling board is used to recreate the wamth and magnificence of the great African game lodges by installing them with 2" eucalyptus battens and aucalyptus rafters. As with many of our decorative materials, they are also an attractive option for drop ceilings, rather than acoustical tiles. Reed board can also be used in resin pour counters and tables for a unique texture and finsh.
Where can it be used? Interior vs. Exterior. Different Climates, etc...
Thatch reed ceiling board is recommended for applications only and is very suitable for high traffic areas.
How do I maintain/take care of this product?
Since it is recommended for interior applications only, thatch reed ceiling board requires no maintenance.
How is it installed?
Thatch reed ceiling board comes in 4' x8' industry standard sheet and is very light and easy to install. It can be stapled, nailed or applied with contact adhesive. When handling, be careful not to flex the sheet of plywood, which can cause the reed to delaminate. Once installed, however, the product is extremely rigid and durable. To cut or trim, simply use a common circular or table saw.
How do you finish the job? (Trim, moldings, etc...)
Thatch reed ceiling board can be trimmed with many different options such as a flat bamboo molding, bamboo strips, zulu rope, white bamboo sticks or half-rounds of bamboo depending on the look you're creating. To create a traditional African look, the sheets would be trimmed with stained eucalyptus battens.
