GARTH AND LARAINE WIGHT, Founders
Garth and Laraine Wight were born in South Africa and grew up in Natal, the land of the Zulu people, high up in Kloof, above Durban and close to the Valley of a 1000 Hills, the city of sugar cane, rickshaws and wide African skies.
They were married in a little chapel with a thatched A-frame roof in the Drakensberg Mountains and fell in love with the romance of this ancient craft of hand-stitched grass roofs. Their first home, that they designed and built themselves, was under thatch and consequently, Garth became the expert in the practical side of grass buying, labor sourcing and quality control. This was an art that was dying in the city of Durban and Garth became a much-sought-after thatch consultant. Not long after that, they established a company named Thatch-it (Pty) Ltd that ultimately employed ten teams of highly trained artisans, responsible for thatching enormous projects like hotels and high-end homes, down to umbrellas and poolside gazebos.
In 1983 they brought thatch to Fort Lauderdale in the form of thatch reed panels - still a firm favorite of Safari's clients today - and their first customer was Six Flags, Hollywood, Florida. In the more than two decades that have followed, Safari has grown from a "Mom 'n Pop" company that sold one product from one country to an established corporation with hundreds of products from over twenty countries, with expanded product lines in indoor outdoor furniture and tropical decor.
Laraine, with her background in Business Administration from Rhodes University, runs the administrative side of Safari, and Garth travels far and wide throughout the Far East, South East Asia and Africa in search of new, exotic lines to capture the imagination of their customers. The Wights are passionate about bringing the old-world romance and ambiance of products from around the world to the everyday lives of our modern high-tech society.
