SIX FLAGS

BACKGROUND: Located in Springfield, Massachusetts, Six Flags New England is the region's largest family theme park featuring ten world-class roller coasters and a variety of other thrill rides. One of the park's most popular summertime attractions is its Hurricane Harbor water park.

CHALLENGE: After many years without significant changes, in 2003 Six Flags wished to revitalize Hurricane Harbor to provide it with a more tropical look and feel that would appeal to its hundreds of thousands of annual visitors.

SOLUTION: Safari proposed using fiberthatch, elephant grass, eucalyptus logs and roping to create a boardwalk, suspension bridge, 41-foot diameter thatched hut and numerous other architectural enhancements. Safari also envisioned outfitting several of the park's existing concession bungalows and restroom buildings with fiberthatch and eucalyptus to add character and a thatched hut feel to these structures.

RESULT: In 28 days, Safari transformed Hurricane Harbor from an ordinary water park into an island oasis that is ideally constructed to withstand heavy foot traffic, harmful UV rays and the cold temperatures that define New England's winter.
